Venofer® (Iron Therapy IV) is iron sucrose, a prescription iron delivered intravenously. It's the same formulation the maternity and infusion teams at UPMC and Allegheny Health Network hospitals use, and it's relied on far beyond Pittsburgh. Venofer® is iron sucrose, a prescription iron given intravenously. Because it's delivered by IV, it bypasses your stomach and intestines entirely, which is exactly why it sidesteps the cramping and nausea that come with pills. It also works faster. Most women feel a real difference in two to four weeks rather than the months oral iron takes.

It's generally very easy to tolerate. The side effects that do show up tend to be minor: a metallic taste during the drip, a mild headache, and occasionally a little nausea. Serious allergic reactions are rare, but since rare isn't impossible, your nurse stays and watches you for the whole visit and carries emergency supplies as standard.

The typical fit is a woman with confirmed low ferritin, usually under 30 ng/mL, who's feeling the effects: worn out, losing hair, foggy. It's especially worth considering if pills upset your stomach or just haven't moved your levels fast enough. You'll need recent CBC and ferritin results, and our supervising physician reviews every case before booking.

Book before 11:00 AM for a good chance at a same-afternoon slot; after that, it's usually a day out. You choose a 90-minute arrival window and slot it wherever your day has a gap. We reach the East End, the South Hills, the North Hills, and across the rivers into the city.

We go well beyond the East End. Alongside Shadyside, Squirrel Hill, and Lawrenceville, we regularly visit the South Hills, the North Hills, and neighborhoods across the bridges into the city. If you're somewhere in the metro and not sure you're covered, just ask when you call; odds are we already come to you.

There's no need to clear your day. The drip itself takes 30 to 60 minutes, and you can stay on calls, work on your laptop, or answer email throughout. Including setup and the short wrap-up afterward, plan on the visit taking 60 to 90 minutes start to finish.
