Is CoolSculpting for Everyone?

Do you want to stay trim and slim but have reached a plateau with diet and exercise? CoolSculpting is the way forward. Better known as cryolipolysis or ‘fat freezing’ in layman’s terms, CoolSculpting is a process that breaks down your fat cells — the really stubborn ones – so that they can be removed from your body via the liver. It is a procedure that accentuates your contours by enabling the removal of fat cells.

If you are scared to go under the knife, rest assured, this is a non-surgical procedure that can be conducted during your lunch break.

Let’s be clear about one thing; CoolSculpting is not a process that will help you lose weight. It helps freeze the fat cells that lie under your skin, not the fat cells located deeper within the body or around your organs. Both CoolSculpting and cryolipolysis are trademarks of Zeltiq Aesthetics, which has affirmed that the process does indeed reduce fat cells in areas where fat cells are concentrated, by at least 20-25%.

CoolSculpting may not be the most viable option for everyone. Learn about the pros and cons, what you can expect in terms of results, and other finer details.

The CoolSculpting process

A non-invasive procedure that involves no incisions, CoolSculpting can last anywhere between 35 and 75 minutes. The part of the body which has excess deposits of fat is held between two paddles, targeting at least 20-25% of the fat cells in that distinct area of your body.

After effects

CoolSculpting results take shape only after a couple of months as your body’s immune system takes a while to release the dead fat cells. However, the good news is that you’ll experiences positive changes in a matter of weeks.

Areas of the body on which CoolSculpting works best

  • Thighs
  • Under the buttocks
  • The back as well the sides
  • Upper arms
  • Under the chin and the jawline

People with the following skin conditions should refrain from CoolSculpting

  • Poor skin tone
  • Loose skin
  • Paroxysmal cold haemoglobinuria – An anaemic condition that results in the destruction of red blood cells when a person experiences cold temperature
  • Cold urticaria – a skin condition that erupts in ‘hives’ when subjected to cold temperatures
  • Cryoglobulinemia- a skin condition that triggers abnormal proteins in the blood stream to thicken under cold temperatures
  • Weak immune system
  • Chronic pain conditions
  • Pregnant women
  • A history of using medications for thinning of blood

Research has proved that in a few rare cases, the fat cells instead of being killed actually get enlarged. This is known as the ‘paradoxical adipose hyperplasia (PAH) though the occurrence of this happening with CoolSculpting is just about 0.0051 percent. A rare condition, it has been observed to occur only in men, though the reasoning behind it has not yet been established. PAH does cause a few changes in the physical appearance and the only solution to it lies in surgery.

In addition to the above, CoolSculpting can result in the following complications, though not in every case:

  • Sweating, nausea, dizziness
  • First and second-degree freeze burns
  • Skin color change
  • Skin scarring
  • Experience pain in the said areas of the procedure days later. This takes at least 30-35 days to subside
  • Hyper pigmentation which eventually fades away
  • The area treated by the procedure gets hardened and causes pain
  • With chances of development of nodules
  • Sudden changes in the layers of fat
